File Processing & Data Policy
Detailed explanation of how files move through our conversion pipeline.
How File Processing Works
Different file formats require different technical tools. File2Format utilizes a hybrid processing model that combines client-side browser execution with isolated server-side conversion tasks to deliver fast, accurate results. Learn more about our infrastructure safeguards in our Security Overview and Privacy Policy.
Browser-Based Processing (Client-Side)
For lightweight image tasks, thumbnail previews, and client-side queue validation, processing happens directly within your web browser using JavaScript and HTML5 APIs.
In client-side mode, your file data never leaves your computer or mobile device. The entire conversion execution runs locally in browser memory.
Files Imported from Google Drive
When you use the Google Drive button in our upload area:
- The official Google Picker overlay launches securely.
- You choose the specific file you wish to convert.
- The selected file is streamed into your active conversion session via HTTPS.
- The tool processes the file and generates your requested output format.
- The temporary file is purged from server storage within 15 minutes.
Files Imported from Dropbox
When you import a file using Dropbox:
- The official Dropbox Chooser interface allows you to pick a single file.
- File2Format receives a temporary secure link to fetch the selected file.
- The file is retrieved into your conversion session, processed, and deleted automatically within 15 minutes.
Server-Side Processing
Complex document conversions—such as Microsoft Word (.docx), Jupyter Notebooks (.ipynb), EPUB eBooks, and Comic Book ZIPs (.cbz)—require server-side parsing engines (like GD, FPDF, and pure-PHP zip handlers). Read our Tool Methodology for details on parser execution.
In these cases, your uploaded file is temporarily saved to an unindexed directory on our server, parsed to extract text/images, converted to your target format, and prepared for direct download.
File Retention & Storage Boundaries
We enforce strict file storage boundaries:
- 15-Minute Lifetime: Temporary files are automatically deleted after 15 minutes.
- No Permanent Storage: We do not operate user document databases or permanent archives.
- No Content Analysis: We do not open, view, analyze, or train machine learning models on your files.
Your Responsibility
File2Format is designed for temporary file processing. You remain responsible for keeping original backup copies of all files prior to converting them on our platform.
